About Us
We are Ketchikan's "Hometown Proud" supermarket. Our IGA store is locally owned and has been doing business in Ketchikan longer than any other supermarket. Great-grandparents Jimmy and Sen Tatsuda founded Tatsuda's in 1916. It was a very small "Mom & Pop" grocery store selling bread and milk. Grandma worked the store while raising a family in the living quaters above the store. All of the children grew up working in the store, and eventually sons Bill and Jim took over the growing business in 1950s. The current supermarket was built in 1974 and is now owned by Bill Tatsuda, Jr.
As a member of Independent Grocers Alliance, a worldwide network of family oriented retailers, we share in the belief that "a good grocery store isn't a sprawling, impersonal example of cookie cutter commerce, but a community hub owned and operated by the very people who know the area best—the citizens."
IGA was founded in 1926 by Frank Grimes, a Chicago accountant who specialized in auditing the books of wholesale grocers. His goal was to develop a network of independent grocers to compete with the burgeoning chains. Along with five associates—Gene Flack, Louis Groebe, W. K. Hunter, H. V. Swenson, and William Thompson—Grimes developed IGA's strategy to capitalize on the strengths of chain stores while creating opportunities for individuals to own and operate an independent business.
Today, IGA is the world's largest voluntary supermarket network, with a presence in 45 countries.
